• I was reminded that our local lifesavers, like Matthew Perrot on the paddle board here, are the true heroes of our community. Spent a day with at Portsea SLSC early summer in 2015. The back beach there is extremely dangerous and I must admit very intimidating even though I was an experienced swimmer. Nevertheless got out into the washing machine and captured some handy black and whites for the feature. (Copyright Michael Dodge/Getty Images)

 • After a strong lead up campaign New Zealand raider Red Ruler was one of the fancies going into the 2008 Caulfield Cup. Here the four year old gelding is given his early morning trackwork in heavy mist by jockey Corey Brown as they head into a magnificent cup-eve sunrise about to have a canter.

This image was heavily under exposed so the sun and the rich red sky was not blown out.
No burning or dodging has taken place underneath the horse. When there is a certain amount of particles in the atmosphere, the spectrum of light is separated into more prominent and distinct bands of colour and contrast than would normally be seen. This effect, combined with the colours of the sunrise make the scene so interesting.
